Stage 1)
Pinpointe Laser - For mild infections - The infected toenails are thoroughly debrided and excess infected nail and debris are removed. The Pinpointe Laser is then performed on the cleaned up and reduced toenail plates. Re-evaluate after two months: If more than 50% improvement is noted repeat the procedure to promote resolution of the infection. If there is little or no improvement go to stage 2.

Stage 2)
NdYAG G+ Laser - For Moderate to Severe infections - The thickened and discolored toenails are debrided thoroughly and excess infected nail debris are removed. The highly powered NdYAG G+ laser is then performed on the cleaned up and reduced toenail plates. Re-evaluate after two months. If any improvement is noted repeat the procedure to promote resolution. Severe infections usually require a small number of treatments. If there is little or no improvement go to stage 3.

Stage 3)
Noveon Laser - For patients with heavier infections that are unresponsive to the standard 1064nm Laser treatment. The Noveon laser is a different kind of laser that will most times kill the infection if the infection has been resistant to standard laser treatment (the standard 1064nm type will work in most instances for most patients) . The toenails are extensively debrided and the Noveon Dual Wavelength laser treatment is then performed on the heavily infected toenails. Re-evaluate in 30 days. If any improvement is noted repeat the procedure until the infection has resolved. Severe infections usually require a small number of treatments to cure the infection.
Stage 4)
Surgical treatment of toenail fungus -
The infected toenail plate is completely removed. The skin heals, and then three weeks later the NdYAG G+ laser treatment is performed directly on the open nail bed. In addition the patient applies antifungal medication directly to the nail bed BEFORE the new toenail grows back. New clean clear toenails are common after this procedure. New small toenails grow back in about three months. New big toes grow back in about 1 year. Monitor every two months. The doctor will check and clear any debris as the new toenail is growing back. If after surgical removal the toenail is still infected it is necessary to repeat this procedure until the fungus is totally eliminated. This procedure is usually very effective for severe and hard to eliminate toenail fungus infections.

It is important to understand that lasers gradually eliminate the fungal infection. Mild infections resolve much quicker than severe infections. Spring and summer will soon be upon us and your feet will soon be out in sandles open toed shoes and out at the pool and at the beach. It is important to remember that toenail infections require several months to respond to laser treatment, so the earlier in the year that you address the fungal infection the more likely it will improve by the summer.
